We work specifically to enhance Concentration, Coordination, Confidence and Agility as well as having lots of Fun, many laughs and creating strong bonds with the children, growing their self esteem and confidence for the future.

Working with groups of Early Years Children in Nursery Units, our sessions are tailored to specific curriculum and individual budgetary requirements

Parents, nurseries and schools, can be confident that the Leaps and Bounds Programme is a structured plan of progressive lessons in line with Early Years Foundation Stage. The Programme underpins the framework of the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage (Q.C.A., DCSF) and Birth to 3 matters (SureStart). 2017 Feedback from Parents and Teachers

Some super comments from a parent at Newbottle Nursery Houghton le Spring

I just wanted to say a big thank you to show my appreciation for all you have done for my son Lewis at your Leaps and Bounds session's at Newbottle Primary Academy.

Lewis has been 'super' excited to attend Nursery on a Wednesday morning since starting your course 8 weeks ago. He was very disappointed that today was his last session.

Today Lewis couldn't wait to show me what he had been taught. Climbing a ladder on the floor. He showed me 'the moves', described exactly what I had to do 'mam you move yours arms like this and lift your legs like this,   can you do that for me?'. 'Mam keep your hands, feet and toes on the ladder!'. When I got it right he gave me a sticker, 'well done mammy you deserve this sticker, look I got this one off Susan, mine says well done'. He was so proud of his achievement, face beaming as he pointed to his orange sticker. 'It's my favourite colour'.

'We had to throw Easter eggs up in the air and catch them. Mine fell on the floor, splat!, S for splat. I put a ball under my chin then between my knees but I dropped it. I was really clumsy'.

Lewis is always so animated when describing the sessions, showing me the actions, really 'getting into it' with a big smile on his face. It's clear to see he really really enjoys himself. As a parent it's a pleasure to see him develop new skills whilst having fun. I couldn't ask for more.

Thank you again Susan.

Many thanks to Farringdon Nursery in Sunderland

Feedback from their parents evening as follows:

Just a quick  note to give you some parent feedback from our recent open evening. Parents told me how much their children enjoy Leaps and Bounds sessions and how much they enjoy working with Sonia. One parent told me her child wakes up every morning asking if it's a Friday in the hope it's Leaps and Bounds day. Well done to you and the team, it's nice to hear positive comments and that the children enjoy their learning.

My daughter has been attending Leaps and Bounds since 2015. Her confidence has greatly improved since attending these sessions both physically and in a group setting.  One of the greatest skills Susan has helped her develop is listening.  I noticed this recently when she attended a different group session with other children of a similar age, they were struggling to follow instruction, whereas my daughter happily listened carefully. The feedback/assessment forms provided by Susan after each block of sessions are great.

As parents they give you guidance about how to develop and encourage your childs skills.

She loves Leaps and Bounds...and Susan!  "

Feedback from Farringdon Nursery in Sunderland are as follows:

:Sonia our Instructor is great to work with. She has great rapport with the children and she has helped the staff learn more about their physical development. The contents of the lessons offer a fully variety to all the children using different equipement and including dance, excersise, motor skills and confidence building.

We find it a great programme that all schools should be involved in when teaching Early Years. Its a sucessful and fun way to build every childs confidence and physical skills:

News and exciting curriculum plans for 2016 from just some of our lovely nurseries

Physical Development is high on the agenda for Paul at Castle View Nursery in Chester le Street.

Daily activities include Tennis and Cricket, culminating in the Leaps and Bounds structured weekly session.

Along with their recently resufaced outdoor areas,  they have seen the completion of a purpose built building to accomodate Paul and his "Castle View Extra services"  This includes Holiday Care for 4-11 year olds

Castle View is an "OUTSTANDING" Ofsted rated Nursery led by mother and daughter team, Kath and Lucy Healer.

Louisa Nursery in Stanley , OUTSTANDING OFSTED RATED , led by Christine Lovell and her team tell me:

"This term the pirates have invaded Louisa Nursery.  This has been a big interest for the children; we have followed the children's interest by making a pirate ship inside and used the large wooden blocks and planks outside to make a huge pirate ship to extend the learning!  We have added lots of resources to enhance this area such as; treasure chests with real treasure!  We have also enjoyed making our own treasure maps with tea stained paper, we encouraged the children to think about what they would like to draw on their treasure map.  They used a variety of creative resources to add character to their maps such as; sand, paint and tissue paper.  The children have also enjoyed making gold coins to use as treasure,  the children enjoyed making salt dough and moulding it into small coins and then painted them gold.  We have also made pirate hats and have learnt lots of new pirate songs and rhymes.  We have also enjoyed P.E sessions with activities surrounding the pirate interest and the children had to follow the instructions from the captain or else you would have to walk the plank!!!!"

and Clever Clogs in Bowburn Durham OFSTED RATED GOOD (part of the Clever Clogs Durham Group) led by Lauren Straughair and her team tell me:

"We have lots of things planned some of them being.....

  • Enhancing Forest Schools for the children 3-5 year olds, lots of making mud pies, climbing trees and watching wildlife.
  • Children aged 5-11 are going to Hardwick Hall to make bird feeders, having a bake off, and have lots of scientific experiments planned for the holiday club.

Thank you to all our nursery sites and parents for allowing Leaps and Bounds to help enhance their childrens Physical Development Curriculum this year. We are looking forward to working alongside and sharing the Programme with more children next year.

Summer News

June/July Summer 2016

Is it just me … or has this year flown by???

Here we are again nearing the summer holidays and many of our “Leaps and Bounds” children, some who have been with us since the age of 2, will be leaving to go on to school. This is always a huge transition for them. We can be confident the great educational start received in nursery and the extra physical development coaching from the Leaps and Bounds team, will ensure they thrive and have great futures ahead.

Sept 2015/2016 has been another exceptionally busy year for the team; myself, Sonia and Heather – having the opportunity to work with many new nursery sites, revisited some old nursery friends and continued the programme with our long term regulars.  Welcome and thank you to all the children, parents and staff across the region.

Most of our “Leaps and Bounds Nursery regulars” have been with us since 2008 and as always, have shown their support and enthusiasm for the Programme and its merits this year. They are eager to offer the Programme regularly to their children and we delight in receiving feedback from parents and staff on the increased awareness and physical development of those children involved.

A big thank you to you all

Too many to mention individually, but all of these fantastic nurseries can be viewed via the web page:

2016 has seen our increased use of TWITTER and LINKED IN as a way of sharing Leaps and Bounds (Durham) information with parents and nurseries and I have been delighted with the recommendations received, Tweets re tweeted and feeds viewed.

Highlights from some of our nursery sites include:

Clever Clogs Nursery Bowburn:

They have recently completed their gorgeous outdoor play area and received their level 5 hygiene certificate.

While Lauren (Manager) at Clever Clogs Bowburn Durham braved the very messy but enjoyable baked bean bath at their Halloween fundraiser.

Castle View Nursery, Chester le Street:

Were delighted to retain their OUTSTANDING OFSTED status…Well Deserved!

Paul is a new team member this year who is working to enhance the nursery’s outdoor sports facilities and often assists in the Leaps and Bounds sessions.

Hylton Redhouse Nursery  Sunderland:

All the team would like to wish Christine Collins: Manager, a very happy retirement.

She has been hugely supportive of the Leaps and Bounds Program, which has delivered to more than 300 Hylton Redhouse children over the last 4years, she will be missed. We are very much look forward to working with Catherine Barnett, Nursery Manager, come September 2015.

And lastly........a lovely piece of feedback from one very happy parent:

"Fraser has been attending the 2/3years class of Leaps and Bounds at Louisa Nursery Stanley for a year now and we have noticed a massive improvement in his physical development and self confidence.  He has always been a bit 'wobbly' and unsteady on his feet, so we thought we would give the program a try.  The sessions have really exceeded my expectations, with well planned and structured sessions.  Sonia, the Instructor, is aware of each child's individual needs and works to build a positive relationship with them.  When we are at the park and out and about Fraser is balancing and climbing with confidence. He comes home every week with his sticker and gives us a demonstration of what he has been doing that day.  I particularly like the report we receive at the end of each block.   I would highly recommend Leaps and Bounds."

Rebecca (parent-Louisa Nursery Stanley )

Thank you to the nurseries who contributed their highlights for this newsletter.

Enjoy the summer and look forward to working with you all again in September

She is lively, enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. each session has been fun and fast paced. Susan amazes us at how she picks up the children's names and assesses their ability. She has built a very close relationship with our children who ask everyday "Is Susan coming today?"  Staff are amazed at the progressions made and cant wait to experience more"

“This has been a fast-paced, fun and activity filled programme delivered by an enthusiastic and professional leader. The children look forward to doing ‘their exercising’ with Susan every Monday morning or Thursday afternoon and are keen to demonstrate their new skills every week. All of the children that go through the Leaps and Bounds programme with Susan have huge amounts of fun. She knows each child by name and how every individual has developed their own skills since starting. The structured programme fulfils many EYFS objectives in a holistic child friendly manner. Susan has been an asset to the Nursery this term and is as keen as the school staff in ensuring each child feels a massive sense of achievement at the end of each session”.

Clever Clogs Nursery Group, Belmont, Durham  has tripled in size after buying two new North East nurseries following a £500k investment.  .

As part of this move, Andrea is implementing Leaps and Bounds programmes into both new nurseries.  Andrea said "The benefits seen over the last 3 years implementing the Leaps and Bounds programme are that the children absolutely love the class whilst developing so many skills essential to early development.  We can see our children's developmental in areas such as confidence, knowledge and understanding; physical literacy and physical movement skills move on so much, that we now feel that Leaps and Bounds is a "must" for all of our nurseries.  We have further plans in the future to expand the group further and Leaps and Bounds is an essential part of those plans.  As a mother of 3 young children myself, I also know that parents love the programme too, and see it as one of the reasons why they choose Clever Clogs over other nurseries".

"We all look forward to Sonia and her Leaps and Bounds sessions, not just the children! The improvements in such a short space of time is already obvious-self esteem, well-being and confidence has grown especially those children who we would not expect to have joined in! It has supported us in our practice and we are reassured to know we are on the right lines and modelling the different skills correctly and safely. It has also given us new PE ideas. Sonia is a great and communicates well with both children and adults. All the children want to sit next to her and hold her hand! We can’t wait for the next set of challenges".

It was lovely to meet the Leaps and Bounds Team at Busy Bears Nursery, Durham last week. Just a small note to say a big thank you for running these sessions in the nursery and we believe her physical development has truly come up in leaps and bounds thanks to your structured programme. She used to take great pride in demonstrating her skills learnt from each session when she returned home on Wednesdays. She is now ever so ready to take new challenges with jumping, landing, balancing etc that sure catches the eyes when we take her to different places/play areas etc. The course sure has made her more confident in many skills at a very early age. As medics involved in care of children we have already recommended this programme to folks we have met and will continue to do so as we believe it encourages children as young as 2 to get involved in physical activities which certainly will have a huge impact in their lifestyle when they grow up. Thank you again and we look forward to seeing her future sessions.

Big thumbs up -Well done and keep up the good work...

"I just wanted to thank Susan, for her hard work and dedication to ensuring every session is an enjoyable and educational experience for the children. For me, Leaps and Bounds helps give children a positive attitude to learning. By developing a fun, educational and positive attitude to exercise L&B provides young children with the tools needed to enjoy living a healthy lifestyle. In society today these skills are essential which is why I firmly believe L&B provides excellent value for money. As a parent you always want the best for your child which is why my daughter is now on her 3rd course of L&B. The most noticeable change has been her confidence level. She is more independent and willing to attempt new challenges. She has developed a sense of pride in her achievements and takes delight in showing me what she can do. I firmly believe that the skills and confidence provided by Susan during the class will benefit my daughter throughout her life."Michelle Hailes – Chloe’s mum Busy Bears Nursery Bearpark Durham

" I have to say that the progress our children have made has been fabulous. From the first session the children have and lots of fun and enjoyment. They have gained many skills through Leaps and Bounds, Susan knows each child by name and how each one has developed their own skills since starting the programme. Even the children who have not participated in this first block know Susan and know it is Leaps and Bounds day. The children love participating and love to collect their achievement stickers at the end of the sessions. Noticeable improvements have been made to their confidence, spatial awareness, verbal and movement memory skills helping them to become more logical thinkers. Parents have remarked on their own children's progress and have been amazed at how confident they have become since starting Leaps and Bounds."Nursery Manager. OUTSTANDING OFSTED 2010/2015

“Our son, Archie, has enjoyed Leaps and Bounds enormously. He is always very excited to tell us what he’s done, proudly announcing I can roll etc. and we have noticed a real development in his agility and coordination. Many, many thanks.” 2011 Parent. Castle View Nursery.  Chester le Street

"Both my son and daughter attended Castle View Private Day Nursery in Chester le Street from the ages of 1- 4yrs. My daughter took part in Leaps and Bounds each week and I could see a profound difference between my two children's ability to catch balls and general co-ordination. My daughter was much more dextrous and also very keen to take part in sports and generally seemed more confident as she was often picked to demonstrate skills in front of the group. I firmly believe that my daughter Rose benefitted tremendously from attending the sessions and would heartily recommend this course to other parents and carers. Susan,  the Instructor running the session was very enthusiastic and was always keen to praise Rose when she had done well - even taking the time to speak to me when I picked my daughter up from nursery - way beyond my expectations. Rose loved attending Leaps and Bounds and she always enjoyed the sessions.

"We have worked with Susan, Instructor, for many years now for both out Toddler and whole of Nursery Department. The Programme fulfills many of the EYFS objectives including Physical, Social, Mathematical and Communication enhancements. A recent visit by HM Inspectors noted how impressed they were with Susan’s engagement of the children, language used and the childrens ability to follow her instructions. Susan is enthusiastic and constantly enhancing sessions with music and props. She liaises with staff to fit the current teaching themes and insists that staff participation is "non negotiable !". The children love Leaps and Bounds and the squeals of excitement coming from the hall during the weekly sessions proves its value to me"

"We chose Leaps and Bounds 3years ago, to provide a physical development programme to enhance our current nursery curriculum and to give the children extra time focusing on physical activity but realize the Programme is so much more. The structure of the leaps and bounds programme helps the children develop at their own pace and to reach their own potential through the challenges they are faced with. Our children are always excited to take part and eagerly look for our instructor Alison out of the window on the day of our sessions. All the children feel a massive sense of achievement at the end of each session when everyone gets a sticker and a round of applause. The parents have commented how their children go home and tell them all about what they have been doing in the sessions and are very happy that their children are enjoying it so much. We look forward to continuing the Leaps and Bounds Programme in our nursery.

"We were amazed when 5 of our nursery children deciding what to play, chose to role play Sonia, our Leaps and Bounds Instructor, during one of her lessons. One took the role of Sonia, introduced herself to the others then began to take the register. They chose to play with the parachute and were able to repeat Sonia word for word including her sticker routine!    The staff offered to take the "game" outside and the "lesson" continued for a further 15 minutes with all children engaged, offering different memories from Sonias lesson.

All our children and staff have benefited from the Leaps and Bounds Programme but to view the activity and hear the recall from the children was fantastic"
